Mr Simcock attended the United Kingdom and Ireland Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons’ conference in London to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the first intraocular lens implantation, performed by Sir Harold Ridley at St Thomas’ Hospital in 1949.
Sir Harold’s pioneering innovation transformed cataract surgery, allowing patients to regain their sight without the need for the extremely thick glasses previously required after surgery. Although his revolutionary idea was initially met with scepticism by his peers, he persevered, ultimately changing the lives of millions of people around the world.
His remarkable contribution to ophthalmology was recognised in 2000, when he was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II.
Today, cataract surgery with intraocular lens implantation is one of the most commonly performed operations on the NHS, restoring sight and making a profound difference to patients’ quality of life.
A remarkable legacy of innovation, determination and vision.
Well done, Sir Harold!
