The following press release from the Macula Society about the nomination was sent to the local papers:

A top eye expert has been nominated for a national award after winning outstanding praise from patients.  Peter Simcock, consultant ophthalmic surgeon, based at the West of England Eye Unit of the Royal Devon & Exeter Hospital, is in the running for the clinical service of the year award as part of the Macular Society’s Awards for Excellence.  The nomination recognises his exceptionally good practice in the care of people with macular degeneration.

Mr Simcock said: “I feel very honoured to be nominated for an award which is entirely voted for by patients.  I had no prior knowledge of the award so it was a nice surprise.  My approach has always been to offer the best medical outcome for my patients as well as educating them about their condition and answering any concerns tha they may have.  The Macular Society also plays a vital role in patient education.  To be recognised and appreciated for what I see as my professional duty is very gratifying.  I am passionate about providing the best possible care for my patients.  I also enjoy meeting new people and finding out about their lifestyle and past history as many macular patients have interesting and productive lives”

Mr Simcock added: “The RD&E is great to work in and the West of England Eye Unit is recognised around the country as an innovative department.  We were the first eye unit in the country to offer a nurse practitioner delivered injection service back in 2008 and many units are now following Exeter’s lead.  I am very proud of our two excellent nurse practitioners in Exeter, Brian Kingett and Nicola Mann who between them have performed almost 7,000 injections and have helped save the sight of many patients in our local community”

Maggie Beed from Exmouth was one of the patients nominating Mr Simcock.  She said: “I’ve always been impressed with Mr Simcock’s approach, I can tell that he really does care about my vision and always does the best that he possibly can for me.  He thoroughly deserves this nomination”

Helen Jackman, chief executive of the Macular Society said: “Peter Simcock and his team do an incredible job in Exeter and we are delighted that they have been recognised for their excellent work”
