Sue Harrod has been very short sighted all her life with poor central vision from myopic macular degeneration.  She has written a book of poems inspired by retinal surgery in Bristol and has recently had cataract surgery in Exeter.  Sue sent me a poem after her cataract operation which beautifully illustrates her thoughts and feeling before, during and after the surgery.  She has kindly agreed to share her poem which you can read by clicking the title of this news post. All proceeds from her book “poetry in vision” go to fund eye research in the UK so please also click this link to view her book.

The High court today approved the use of Avastin to treat patients with wet age-related macular degeneration.  I have used Avastin for over 10 years to treat my private patients as there is good evidence that it works just as well as the officially approved drugs.  This will save the NHS £500m a year.

Vision Reaped

A refillable bottle, she drinks from a straw

Head still down, looks at the floor.

Seven days of discipline, rigour and care,

She stays at home, passes time creatively there.

Reading a few words, listening to radio three,

Hoping to find momentum in focus, fresh eyes to see.

Unsteady on her feet, she grabs onto his arm

Blind in one eye, it’s time to be calm.

The days pass quietly, will healing occur?

She keeps herself busy, looks through the blur.

A bubble bounces, teardrops sting yet

Sturdier she has confidence to lift her head and sing.

Weeding off balance, she gardens on her knees.

A passion reawakens, and in wonderment she sees.

Energy rejuvenates, her vision clears, the Summer

comes and a beautiful harvest appears.
